The Neptune City Police Department was established in 1881 with several residents being sworn as “Town Marshals” by the Mayor. They acted as volunteer, using their own personal equipment and horses to keep law and order.

The first officer was hired in 1891, he was paid $2.00 per day and worked fourteen hour days, seven days a week. Other officers soon followed working twelve hour days for $20.00 to $60.00 per month.

As the town grew, so did the need for law enforcement officers. In the 1940’s and 50’s, the department grew to five sworn officers and several special officers.  Today the department totals seventeen sworn full time police officers, which includes two detectives.
